Welcome to Apple Pay

What is Apple Pay™?

Apple Pay™ provides consumers with an easy, private and secure way to use their iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch for card payment transactions, without collecting any of the transaction information and maintaining cardholder data security.

When will it be available in the UK?

Apple Pay™ is now being actively used within the UK. For shopping in stores, Apple Pay™ will work with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and with Apple Watch™, on contactless/NFC capable payment devices at over 250K merchant locations in the UK.

How does it work?

Utilising VeriFone technology, Cunninghams software solutions enable users to conduct quick and secure transactions via compatible Apple mobile phone technology.

Apple Pay™ is based on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for proximity payments and an embedded Secure Element. Apple Pay™ uses industry-standard EMV contactless protocols over NFC. Apple Pay™ is compliant to EMVCo tokenisation framework and works with a tokenised PAN (Primary Account Number) and Cryptogram (transaction specific dynamic security code).

Apple Pay™ also requires a fingerprint authentication for payments to be made through Touch ID via the iPhone home button.

How do Apple Pay™ users get started?

Apple Pay™ users add their credit card or debit card on Apple Pay through Passbook. They can decide either to use their existing iTunes card details or they can use the iSight camera to instantly capture and then add card information. Q&A: Apple Pay in the UK.

To add additional cards on iPhone 6 within the Passbook app: Just tap the plus sign and follow the onscreen instructions. On iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, start by opening Settings, tap “Passbook & Apple Pay”, and then tap “Add Credit or Debit Card”. For Apple Watch, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap “Passbook & Apple Pay”, and then tap “Add Credit or Debit Card”. The first card you add will be your default payment card, but you can always choose a different card when paying or select a new default.

How secure is Apple Pay™?

Apple Pay™ has been designed with the user's personal data security in mind. It doesn't collect any transaction information that can be tied back to a user and payment transactions are between the user, the merchant and the user's bank. Apple doesn't collect your purchase history, so when you are shopping in a store or restaurant Apple doesn't know what you bought, where you bought it or how much you paid for it. Actual card numbers are not stored on the device, instead, a unique tokenised Device Account Number is created, encrypted and stored in the Secure Element of the device. The Device Account Number in the Secure Element is walled off from iOS and not backed up to iCloud®.

Additionally, fingerprint authentication - Touch ID - is required to 'unlock' payment. If the iPhone is stolen or misplaced, the customer can feel confident it won't / can't be used for payment since it requires Touch ID. Also, they can remotely delete their Apple Pay™ account through their card issuer or through the Find My iPhone app.

Which Verifone products will work with Apple Pay?

Cunninghams can now supply Verifone contactless-enabled PCI PTS 3.x and above products that support Apple Pay™ including VX Evolution payment devices.
